Publishing
From 1985 to 2018, the Centre for Slovenian Literature published the Aleph Edition book series. The series included new Slovenian literary works (several poem collections got the prestigious Jenko Award) as well as translations of contemporary world literature. Over 100 titles were published in the series, some bilingual. Aleph publications have also been recognised also internationally and received financial support of the EU Cultural Programmes.
The Contemporary European Poetry project, supported by the EU Culture 2000 Programme, brought translations from Polish, Macedonian, English, Croatian, Lithuanian, Danish and French.
Some of the centre's recent publications (English translations of contemporary Slovenian poems, short stories, novel and drama excerpts) are available for download on the website.
Support and promotion
In the last few years, the centre has supported various anthologies of Slovenian literature and organised numerous international literary tours, including visits to the Centre International de Poesie, Marseilles; the Circulo de Bellas Artes, Madrid; Le Theatre Poeme, Brussels; INALCO, Paris; the Centro Rómulo Gallegos, Caracas; the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and the International Book Fair, Sao Paulo; the Casa de Fernardo Pessoa, Lisbon; and many other venues in Australia, Scandinavia, Poland, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Czechia, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. In 2005, the Centre for Slovenian Literature organised a complex presentation of Slovenia at BookWorld Prague 2005 with an accompanying catalogue.
The Centre for Slovenian Literature is a member of Literature Across Frontiers (LAF).
Translation workshops and funding
In past years, the Centre for Slovenian Literature organised several translation workshops dedicated to gay poetry, works of female authors, and Turkish authors. In May-June 2010, a week-long workshop in poetry translation is organised in the context of the World Book Capital Ljubljana 2010. The workshop, organised in cooperation with the Literature Across Frontiers and the Living Literature Festival, featured several guests: Antoine Cassar (Malta), Yolanda Castaño (Spain), Xi Chuan (China), Veronika Dintinjana (Slovenia), Stanislav Lvovsky (Russia), Mamta Sagar (India) and Yasuhiro Yotsumoto (Japan).
Along with the Slovene Writers’ Association and the Slovene PEN Centre, the centre co-administers funds from the Trubar Foundation for subsidising foreign publishers who wish to publish translations of Slovenian authors in their native languages.
The centre also offers occasional grants for translations commissioned by the Ministry of Culture.
Kočevje residency
From 2003 until 2012, the centre offered a 3-week residency in September and a grant for international writers, poets, dramatists and translators with an interest in Slovenian literature and culture to stay in Kočevje, Slovenia, developing their projects and, if appropriate, meeting with Slovenian writers and/or translators. In 2010, poet, screenwriter and literary translator András Gerevich (1976 Budapest) was selected.
